Men's Coach Bio

Samuel G. Puryear Jr. is Howard men’s head golf coach and Director of the golf program, leading the Bison in the Northeast Conference at the NCAA‑Division I level. Hired in 2020, he launched Howard’s first‑ever Division I men’s‑golf team and helped the program win the 2022 MEAC men’s‑golf title as well as consecutive NEC championships. Puryear emphasizes fundamentals, course‑management, and high‑level competition, building a modern, student‑centered program rooted in Howard’s HBCU legacy.

Women's Coach Bio

Samuel G. Puryear Jr. also oversees Howard women’s golf as Director of the program, guiding the Bison in the Northeast Conference. He leads a staff that includes assistant coaches Steve Block, Sheldon Holloway, and Joshua Smith, and has helped the women’s team win the Arcis HBCU Golf Championship. Puryear focuses on developing technically‑sound players, strong team culture, and national‑level exposure, using the program to expand opportunities for women in the sport at an HBCU.
