Southern University is a public, historically Black land‑grant university on the Mississippi River side of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, known for its HBCU traditions, marching band, homecoming (“Jaguar Palooza”), and strong programs in business, biology, criminal justice, and the liberal arts. Students often rave about the tight‑knit “Jaguar” community, Black‑centered campus life, and the energetic vibe created by Greek organizations, gospel culture, and big‑game days.

“I love Southern’s HBCU‑on‑the‑River vibe, how easy it is to get close with fellow students and faculty while still feeling part of a big‑family campus with huge homecoming energy, but from a past‑student view I’ll say the aging facilities, parking and housing headaches, and the way administrative slowness could really slow things down were all more noticeable once I stopped just visiting and started living there.”
